Giving and sharing are prevalent in times of calamities, and the recent eruption of the Taal Volcano in Batangas has made way to tons of donations from different organizations and private individuals in the Philippines. Foreign aids also keep on coming to alleviate the situation of the affected families. When times like this happen, the first thing that comes to most people's mind is DONATING USED CLOTHES. It is many people's favorite because it is more convenient and economical than donating cash and goods. There is nothing wrong with donating used clothes. But here is a thing, people. Are we donating used clothes and items RESPONSIBLY? Or we just want to get rid of those UNWANTED CLOTHES and empty our closet and stock room of things that are no longer beneficial to us?
Come on, I dare you to be honest! WILL YOU DONATE YOUR MOST BEAUTIFUL, MOST FAVORITE OUTFIT? OF COURSE NOT! Most of the time, what you will be willing to give away with all your heart are the unwanted ones like baggy or too tight clothes, clothes with damage, clothes that you grew tired of. I have seen weird clothing donations online for the people in the evacuation centers. It is a cute, good thing that we Filipinos have so much sense of humor and gratitude that we were able to see the good in the donated wedding gowns, formal attires, school uniforms, office uniforms, inmate uniform and so many clothes which are not fit to wear regularly. BUT as donors, we should know that donating clothes is more complicated than any other form of donation. PLEASE, let us keep in mind that when we give, let us preserve the dignity of the people we are helping. KUNG NAGKATAON NA HINDI MALAMIG nang PUMUTOK ang TAAL, aanhin ang mga gown at blazers? What are they gonna do with the baggy clothes? Makakasikip pa ang mga ito sa evacuation center and later on those clothes will be thrown away as garbage because they can not be used on a daily basis.
Again, there is NOTHING WRONG with DONATING USED CLOTHES, but be responsible enough. It is time that we call out donations which are not what people in charities need. Evacuation centers are not dump sites. Kapag basura na para sa atin, huwag na ipamigay. Do not donate clothes which cannot be used by people in their daily lives. Sige nga, paano ka kikilos sa evacuation center kung naka-wedding gown ka dahil wala ka nang choice, iyon lang ang naibigay sa'yo? Keep in mind: DIGNITY IN SHARING AND CARING. Thank you for donating but we want to help, right? Sorry for being blunt, but giving away what is garbage to you is not helping. Donate used clothes and items responsibly. :)
